I have been kind of following the news coverage on the lost Boy Scout in Utah and now that they've found him alive and well, I think I can express that this kid seems really dumb.
Here is the story
From what they have pieced together- this kid got lost on the way to the cafeteria! and this is coming from a person who gets lost (confused) a lot with directions. Well I did anyway, I'm a lot better now and have navigated Jason and I from one destination to another with a map on several occations.
So he gets lost on his way to the cafeteria and instead of staying where he is, he continues to hike (for 5 miles) UP the Mt. rather than down, and HIDE from searchers.
What happened to "hug a tree"?
I got lost once when the family was camping at South Mt. State Park. We were packing up and Matt, Becca and Abby had gone ahead to the car, so Mom let me go to catch up with them. Somehow I took the wrong path at a fork in the road (I didn't even see the other path) I didn't recognize anything, but the ranger we had spoken to had a chainsaw in his car and there were a lot of felled trees on this path so I thought it just looked different because of that. After a while I knew I was lost, so I sat down and cried a little- called for my mommy and then got up and turned around and walked back the way I came. I stayed on the path the entire time, and was able to find my way back.
How do you get lost at a Boy Scout camp on the way to the cafeteria!? You have to assume he had walked that way several times before this.
Why would you go off the path?
And where were the counselors?! At Girl Scout camp children didn't go wandering off alone! We had a buddy system going at all times and when we moved from one activity/function to another we went as a group!

They WERE using the Buddy system, his buddy left him at the climing wall to go eat. He was hiding from searches because they were strangers and he was afraid they would steal him. His dad has addmitted that they had not explained the difference.
Welcome to the realities of the Boy Scouts in Utah. They don't require any training or skills to become a Boy Scout leader. Check out this article on the changes the Boy Scouts plan to make and the lack of knowledge these boys have.

are you freakin' kidding me? you're really going to use an idiot 11 year old cub scout who was there with daddy to represent the teachings of the boy scouts. the post was ok, but the title is ridiculous.. you're obviously implying that this never would have happened in a girl scout camp. ok. ok. i bow down. women are smarter than men... but do you really want to talk about senses of direction?
Can we remember that this boy was 11 years old and a CUB scout, not a "boy scout".
Lets all remember also that there is always more to the story. In the same way I believe that there was more to the story in the Elizabeth Smart case.
"Girl Scouts vs. Boy Scouts"
The Girl Scouts of America has ties with planed parenthood.
Enough said.
Excuse me.
Planned Parenthood.
It's overly broad to dismiss the entire Girl Scout organization based on that association.
Likewise, there are all kinds of stupid things that happen at both Girl and Boy Scout camps. That being said, it's my general impression (based on my own experiences) that the Boy scout camps I went to tended to be a lot less organized and more accident prone than the Girl Scout camps my sister's went to. In some ways, that was appealing....
Anyway, this boy does sound to have made some very poor choices. It is worth noting that basic camping skills (including what to do when lost) are taught at the cub scout level. I can sympathize with a kid making mad choices under stress, but he really should have known better.
I'm glad he's been found and that so many people helped him out. Around here if a kid gets lost in the mountains they just wait until he sets off a land mine and use the explosion to find him.
She has an awsome troop! I attended their awards ceremony last week.
Also a Buddy System isn't a Buddy System if the Buddy leaves the other behind =)
i think our survival skills come from the fact that we caome from a large famliy. if you wandered off you got left behind. i would also like to point out that when you got lost you didn't hug a tree. you went back the way you came. trees look that same. maybe he thought he was going back the way he came.
i really wanted to say something about the "hug a tree" program being propaganda for the similar "tree hugger" program offered by groups like greenpeace... hmmm. greenpeace, planned parenthood...
JUST KIDDING!!!!
