Marathon Day...sort of.

I guess it actually started the night before...

I was staying with Lissa Wilkinson Taylor in Salt Lake City, we were going to be to running the race together, but she wussed out and only registered for the Half Marathon.

Anyway, she has two dogs, "Moose" who is a German short haired pointer, and Harley who is one of the ugliest boxers I've ever laid eyes on. Mark, Lissa's husband adopted her about six years ago and was told she was at least four years old at the time. Harley isn't fond of other dogs, but has gotten used to Moose.

Jason and I brought Grace along for the ride (14 hours!) and on the first day Lissa and I introduced the dogs. I thought it would be a better idea to let one dog out at a time and so we let Grace and Moose meet each other. It went just fine, other than Moose being a total submissive pushover and Grace being a bossy little tattle tale. After such a rousing success we decided to let Harley out, and were rewarded with tolerance...at first. It was hate at second sight.
They ended up in a growling, snapping, slapping fight- nothing landed but it was clear they were not going to be friends. So we put Harley back in her kennel and after about 30 minutes Moose as well.
Lissa is trying to sell her house and had a showing that day so Grace went to Grandma Pats for the afternoon to ensure no one let her out of the back yard on accident. that evening as I was walking back to the house Lissa greeted me at the front door announcing that...wait for it...Harley had died.

No freaking joke- the dog that had been fine the night before and even that afternoon was now dead in the back yard and Mark was digging a grave for her that very moment.
Mark was really nice and didn't blame me or my dog but I'm pretty sure that Grace gave Harley a heart attack. It was really awkward and upsetting, and Mark was really upset because he had, had Harley before he even met Lissa.

Isn't that an awfully long lag for a heart attack? As funny as that would be, it seems unlikely that the dog would die hours later...

well I don't think it was actually hours later...it was about 1pm when we left and Harley was found at about 5:30pm and was already stiff...

hmmm, well, an ambiguous time of death makes it difficult to rule out, but still. A heart attack after an altercation with a dog? I'd think it would happen at the time of the altercation... Also, if the dog was that feeble...
